Post Civil War photograph showing Edward R. Blake holding the tattered flag of the 24th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. Blake served in Company H of the 24th Wisconsin and served as the color bearer from the Atlanta campaign through the end of the war. Following his service, he was elected to the Wisconsin legislature before moving to Chicago. This photograph was taken very soon after the war ended and shows a young Blake in civilian suit holding the national color, including staff. The color, particularly the top half, has been almost completely shredded through holes and tears received in battle. This photograph conveys the size of the flags carried during the Civil War as well as the amount of damage they received. An oversized color tinted version of the photograph is also part of the collection. This image is interesting due to the color tests that were done on the border around the original photograph. The collection also includes a copy print photograph and negative of the original image, a photograph showing how the image was displayed by the G.A.R. Memorial Hall, and a photocopy of biographical information on Blake.
